Centenary Commemoration Open Day

Sunday 11th November – Very Special Centenary Commemoration Remembrance Day – Open day to celebrate 100 years since the end of WW1, and featuring a display from Spelthorne Museum, period music and a finger buffet following the annual parade and service to be held at the memorial in Market Square.

The club will be open to the public before, during and after the service, and will be serving hot beverages and refreshments until 6 pm. There is plenty of seating and a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all those attending this special occasion.

Allotment soup, corned beef hash and mutton stew were all on offer, having been expertly recreated from traditional recipes and ingredients locally sourced during a night-time raid on an undisclosed vegetable patch. Complemented by a contemporary buffet and self-service tea and coffee, replenished regularly throughout the afternoon.

A free raffle allowed winning ticket holders to buy a beverage of their choice for the equivalent of one shilling, being the price of a typical pint of ale back in the day.

Open Day Entertainment

Not put off by the attendance of Spelthorne Mayor, Cllr Jean Pinkerton, resident keyboard player Kevin hit all the right notes and mostly in the right order, which is more than can be said for the members and guests attempts at adding vocals! With club President Alan Nevin compering, and the vocal bar set at a manageable height thanks to Graham Stevens’ baritone rendition of “My Old Man’s A Dustman”, there was no shortage of volunteers ready to impose their own unique interpretations on the catalogue of wartime tunes and pub songs Kevin had dutifully prepared, adapted on the fly to the variety of keys and tempos chosen.

Hats off to Kevin, and a big thank you to the stewards, staff and members’ combined contributions to this monumental effort.
